Quote of the Day

>> Monday, July 9

“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.”
-Mother Teresa

Katherine Dunham

Here is one of my favorite entertainers. She is an inspiration to me on so many levels. I am a dancer and her style, movements and grace are things I try to emulate.  I thought I would share my love of Katherine Dunham with all of you. She was my hero and my icon.

Katherine Mary Dunham

Born: June 22, 1909 Chicago, Illinois

Died: May 21, 2006

Occupation: choreographer, dancer

Miss Katherine Dunham was born in Joliet, Illinois in 1909. She became one of the first African Americans to attend the University of Chicago where she earned bachelor, masters and doctoral degrees in anthropology. Supported by a Rosenwald Fellowship, she completed groundbreaking work on Caribbean and Brazilian dance anthropology as a new academic discipline. In 1931, Miss Dunham established her first dance school in Chicago. She began one of the most successful dance careers in the American and European theater in 1934, which led to leading roles in musicals, operas and cabarets throughout the world.

In the late 1930’ Miss Dunham established her own dance school and touring company in New York City. The Katherine Dunham Troupe won critical acclaim throughout the 1940s while performing more than 100 original works choreographed by Miss Dunham. Miss Dunham is also credited with developing one of the most important pedagogues for teaching dance which is still used throughout the world. In the late 1930’s, Miss Dunham married one of America’s most highly regarded theatrical designers, Mr. John Pratt, forming a powerful creative team that lasted until his death in the 1960’s.

Throughout her illustrious career as one of the world’s most respected dancers, choreographers and teachers, Miss Dunham used her talents fame and resources to call public attention to social injustices at home and abroad. A 47-day hunger strike Miss Dunham undertook in 1993, at the age of 82, helped shift public opinion towards America’s relations with Haiti, resulting in the return of Haiti’s first duly-elected president.

In 1967, Miss Dunham joined the faculty of Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, where she helped create a performing arts training center and established a dance anthropology program. In 1969, Miss Dunham created a community-based arts education program in East St. Louis, called the Katherine Dunham Centers for the Arts and Humanities. The centers seek to provide Metro East residents with an opportunity to witness and participate in all of the fine, performing and cultural arts. The centers are the St. Louis Metropolitan region’s only multi-disciplinary arts organizations devoted to the study, appreciation and celebration of diverse cultures.

Miss Dunham’s intellectual, artistic, and humanitarian contributions have earned her many coveted awards over the years, including the Presidential Medal of Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, French Legion of Honor, Southern Cross of Brazil, Grand Cross of Haiti, NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, Lincoln Academy Laureate, and the Urban Leagues’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Miss Dunham was one of 75 women whose lives were celebrated in the book, I Have A Dream.

Lucky 07.07.07 - What Does It Mean To You?

7 the number of completion. As this day approached, I heard of many brides and grooms getting married on this day hoping it would bring their marriage an extra shot of luck. There were many bachelors who were using this time as chance to say I love you and vowing their undying love by proposing to the love of their lives on this most auspicious day. But do we really know what the truth or myth is surrounding the number 7 and why this day out of any other days out the year or centuries is so special. I just wanted to share with you some info I found on the number 7:

Reservations for 1

Bring....Bring...Bring...(don't laugh, it's my best word effect for a ringing phone)
Hostess: Chez Fear. How may I assist you?
Me : I would like to make a reservation for my fears and reservations.
Hostess: How many in your party?
Me: One. Definitely just  a party of one.

Yes, I said it. I have fears and I definitely a reservation about the current state of affairs called my romantic love relationship. Why is it that the future holds so many fears and reservations? Why can't life just be full of security and all-knowing comfort? Is this God's way of testing our faith?

Hebrews 11:1 states, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen(NKJV).

So what exactly am I hoping for? I pray to God that he shows me the evidence of the things that I wish to see. This brings me to my next question.... Are we seeing what we want to see or allowing God to show us the vision in his own way?.................................

I've been dating a guy, we shall now respectively call Man-child or Mr. C, for 5 years now. He is a really good guy, (there's always a but) but lately I've felt that the chemistry hasn't been there. On paper everything is there, he would be the type of guy most girls fight over (especially in this day and age where there are a limited supply of available quality black men. Yeah, I said it... Quality Black Men!) and you can present to your mother; however, in person like that famous song from B.B. King, the thrill is gone.

Quote of the Day

“Find a guy who calls you beautiful instead of hot,
who calls you back when you hang up on him,
who will lie under the stars and listen to your heartbeat,
or will stay awake just to watch you sleep...

wait for the boy who kisses your forehead,
who wants to show you off to the world when you are in sweats,
who holds your hand in front of his friends,
who thinks you're just as pretty without makeup on.
One who is constantly reminding you of how much he cares
and how lucky he is to have you....
The one who turns to his friends and says, 'that's her.'”

Trini G.R.I.T.S & The City

Welcome all to Trini G.R.I.T.S. This all about me, a Trini-American Girl Raised IThe South living and loving in Atlanta, GA. I welcome you into my world and I hope you feel at home. I'm from the low country of South Carolina trying to make Atlanta my home. Here is just a little about me.....

I am the girl you love to hate but hate not to have as a friend. I am the girl you want to love but the one your mama also warned you about. I am the one you can't live with but cannot live without. I can be as sweet as you want let me be, or crazy as you act up. I mirror the attitudes people project to me, so if you don't like me you probably don't like yourself. But then again if I were you I would hate me too.

I am the consummate URBAN domestic goddess (Look out B. Smith, Sandra Lee and Martha Stewart) who can do it all from cooking Curry and an eight-course gourmet meal to repairing walls and laying tile. I am a slave no longer to Corporate America. I now currently work in the more creative and passionate field of event and floral design. Who knew work could be so much fun?

I am a runway fashion show fanatic, Amazing Race zealot (if only I had a partner...), gospel, soca (especially Destra), old school r&b loving chick with touches of classical music for drama (If you've never listened to Nessun Dorma or Con te Partiro you have no idea what you are missing) and everything in between. I truly believe you can't wrong with a string of pearls and diamond studs. I love all things vintage from 20's to the 60's. I am flea market deal hunter and farmer's market junkie.

I am the ultimate explorer who loves to travel, shop, and conquer. I LOVE musical theater and performing. I love painting and reading books. I read everything from Zane's The Heat Seekers to The 48 Laws of Power and everything in between.

I like being courted, romanced and treated well. Any man who deals with me must bring more to the table than silverware and a healthy appetite and he should expect the same of me. I believe the 11th commandment should be 'Thou shalt not act cute when it comes to food'. I love food and I'm not afraid to eat it either. I hate being asked what my favorite color is because it changes depending on what day you ask me, mostly I rock with the purple - color of royalty. I love all things colorful and I am such a huge fan of change. So while you're still deciding on what to do next I have already made moves.

I feel I have the best of both worlds Born in the north, raised in the south and instilled with strong Caribbean values. I have a good Trini upbringing (Mom is from Trinidad & Tobago) and strong southern roots with a culture all it's own (Dad is from the low country of South Carolina). I'm a 27 year old divalicious (friend's word not mine - he thought it suited me) -social butterfly with real hair, real nails and a real booty that can even make Beyonce or Jennifer Lopez blush (I don't think you're ready for this.... -Yeah, I said it!). Don't believe -Do you want to test my wine? I DARE YOU (for all the Destra fans).

Most Importantly, I am truly a Child of God. We talk to each other, have long walks together and have tea every afternoon at 3 (no lie, folks). In the words of James Cleveland I truly find daily inspiration:

God is my protection.
God is my all in all.
God is my guide and direction.
God is my all in all.

God is my joy in time of sorrow.
God is my all in all.
God is my today and tomorrow.
God is my all in all.

God is the joy and the strength of my life,
He moves all pain, misery, and strife.
He promised to keep me, never to leave me.
He's never ever come short of His word.
I've got to fast and pray, stay in His narrow way,
I've got to keep my life clean everyday;
I want to go with Him when He comes back,
I've come to far and I'll never turn back.

GOD IS MY ALL IN ALL

I welcome you to the many adventures of TriniG.R.I.T.S. and I can't wait to see what the world unfolds.
